BlueGriffonTM

The next-generation Web Editor
based on the rendering engine of Firefox

09Jun 2011

1.1.1

Because of a bug severely affecting the CSS Pro Editor add-on on Linux, I will probably release a 1.1.1 with a workaround. I have found a way to make <panel noautohide="true> panels at least reponsive on Linux even if they become modal. I know, I know, panels should not be modal, but compared to a severe loss of functionality, that's a rather good compromise.

CSS Pro Editor add-on

I'm almost done with the CSS Pro Editor add-on. It will be sent to Platinum Offer Subscribers on monday, if everything goes well in the mean time.

Important note: BlueGriffon 1.0 has a bug related to the serialization of stylesheets when a @charset rule is present at the beginning of the stylesheet and that bug also affects the CSS Pro Editor add-on. This bug will be fixed in BlueGriffon 1.1.

Warning: it is highly recommended to delete your BlueGriffon profile if you installed and used pre-1.0 versions of the editor. You will have to re-install your add-ons after that.

  • on Windows XP: delete c:\Documents and Settings\yourlogin\Application Data\Disruptive Innovations SARL
  • on Windows 7: delete c:\Users\yourlogin\AppData\Roaming\Disruptive Innovations SARL

Back in july 2003, when Netscape collapsed, I decided to start my company Disruptive Innovations to write and distribute my/our own software. I never really dreamt of working for others as a contractor. But when Linspire's sponsoring ended and given the cost of employment here, the only survival choice was to look for contracts. It took me a looong time to find an investor to back us but that quest eventually ended positively.

In the near future, the collection of add-ons available will grow. A CSS Pro Editor is on track, and trust me, it will be the best on the market. I am also working on a CSS Optimizer or at least an add-on able to list all the performance or maintainability hits in the stylesheets attached to a document. A Project Manager and a Template Manager are also on the radar, almost done. The Template Manager will allow to create a new document based on online free templates in one single click. No need to search for templates on the interweb if you don't have time for that, we'll do it for you, feeding you a list of freely available sources. And there are even cooler ideas in the works. Stay tuned !

I would like to thank first my investor, AGB Ventures, who believed in the project and supported it heavily. Then all my thoughts go to the contributors:  code or build contributors (Laurent Jouanneau, Jean-Yves Cronier, Alex Bodnaru, Frédéric Bezies and Remi Collet) and L10N contributors (Dean Lee, Goofy, Pascal Cuissinat, Antonio Paniaga, Michal Stanke, André Frick, Simon Speich, Alex Bodnaru, Andrea Sanavia and Koji Ishii). Guys, you rock! Finally, all of that would not exist without Mozilla and its team of gurus extraordinaires, so thanks for being here and allowing people like me to build upon what you do.

If you like BlueGriffon and you want to see it evolve and grow, please support it buying add-ons. That "Freemium" model is the best way to guarantee we'll be able to keep the editor afloat, Open Source and free of charge because we have a revenue stream coming from our add-ons.

And if you want BlueGriffon in your own language that is not in the nine original locales released with BlueGriffon 1.0, why don't you help us? There are cool presents for you if you do!

/* Enjoy! */

</Daniel>

BlueGriffon in Japanese

  • thursday 3:22pm Paris time, I pinged Koji Ishii, my co-worker in the CSS WG to ask him if some acquaintance of his could help localizing BlueGriffon in ja-JP
  • he replied thirty minutes later saying "I'm more than happy to spend my 3 hours for BlueGriffon" !
  • the patch was attached to the corresponding Bugzilla bug today sunday 7:50am Paris time
  • I found an encoding problem that he fixed in two hours and a few remaining english words I fixed immediately
  • the ja-JP locale is now enabled by default for BlueGriffon 1.0 as of revision 660 !

All praise the amazing Koji Ishii !!!

Selectors Builder in the CSS Pro Editor

I have update/revamped my old Selectors Builder code. Here's a screenshot of the result... It's not perfectly ironed yet but let me tell you it's bidirectional: if you build a selector using the controls, you'll see the textbox at the top of the dialog updated; and if you edit that textbox's content and type your selector by hand, you'll see the individual sequence's boxes appear in the dialog :-)

BlueGriffon 1.0 Preview Release in sight !

People, the number of bugs on my radar is shrinking at fast pace and if everything goes well, the release of BlueGriffon 1.0PR is planned for tuesday 26 or wednesday 27 april. That's only a high probability, not a certainty. Watch this blog.

For the time being, we have four locales ready: en-US, fr-FR, zh-CN and es-ES. That's already good but more would be even better!

pt-PT is not ok any more since I haven't heard from the maintainer since the first days of february... If you want BlueGriffon to be localized in your language, please read the following guidelines and jump in! As an approximation, I originally wrote BlueGriffon entirely in english and the fr-FR localization took me exactly two hours and a half.. I did it fast, you should probably bet on 3 hours. Still, it's really easy to do, there's really no major skills required. If you can translate from english or french into your own language, that's all you need!

In the following tables, green lines represent a locale up-to-date ; a yellow line represents a locale that hit at least once a public release of BlueGriffon but does not seem to be maintained any more ; an orange line represents a locale that is not maintained at all, the bug exists but no contribution was ever made. Locales without an existing bug are of course not listed.

If you plan to update pt-PT or work on a new locale for BlueGriffon 1.0 Preview Release, please note that the patch must be attached to the bug before the 23rd of April. If you submit your patch between the 24th and the release day, I can't promise your locale will be included in the release...

L10N contributors are of course mentioned in the About BlueGriffon dialog.
